What I say:
My interest in teaching and education began in prison. While I was studying music at Dartington College of Arts I had a part time job teaching guitar classes to inmates at the local prison. This experience left me with the lasting impressions that education has a fundamental influence on where we end up in life, and that by improving it we can improve and enrich lives tremendously and help people to recognise their true potential.

My interest in technology developed whilst living abroad and trying to find sources and ways of motivating my young daughter to learn more English. Her response to computer based materials sparked my own interest and motivated me to study for an M.Ed in technology and ELT at Manchester University.

I've been working in ELT since 1992 first as a teacher and then as a teacher trainer, ICT trainer and ELT writer. My interest in teacher training and educational technology took me away from the physical classroom and into a post as manager of the British Council's websites for EL teachers. During the 5 years that I held this post I developed a keen understanding of online learning and its potential for teacher development as well as the power of accessing networks and communities to ensure that the products I managed met the needs and expectations of their users. I rounded out my experience with a PRINCE2 project management qualification, the de-facto standard method for ensuring sound project management practice.

I have a thorough grounding now in most aspects of digital product development and deployment as well as  research and evaluation.

Since leaving the British Council in 2007 I have been working as a freelance learning technology consultant, writer and trainer. You can find out a little more about the kinds of projects I've been involved in below.
